Judge John C. Few

John Cannon Few is the Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals.

John was born in Anderson on April 9, 1963. He grew up in Greenwood, and finished Greenwood High School in 1981. He attended college at Duke University. During his junior year, he served as Duke's athletic mascot, the Blue Devil. In 1985, he was graduated from Duke with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Economics.

John then attended the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of The Order of Wig and Robe, The Order of the Coif, and the South Carolina Law Review, which he served as Student Works Editor. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 1988.

John then served as law clerk to The Honorable G. Ross Anderson, Jr., United States District Judge, in Anderson. From 1989 until 2000, John practiced law in Greenville. John has been admitted to practice in all Courts of South Carolina, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. On February 9, 2000, he was elected Circuit Court Judge, and he began service in that capacity on July 1, 2000. On February 3, 2010, Judge Few was elected Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. He was sworn in as Chief Judge the same day.

Judge Few has been active in teaching law. He has been a member of the Faculty at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada, since 2005. His most recent assignment with the Judicial College was teaching a week of evidence to New Mexico Judges in Albuquerque in September, 2009, through the New Mexico Judicial Education Center. Judge Few has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Charleston School of Law since 2008, where "Professor" Few has taught Evidence and Advanced Evidence. In the summer of 2010 Charleston School of Law named him a Distinguished Visiting Professor. He has also given and moderated numerous Continuing Legal Education Seminars in South Carolina, and several other states. In 1996, he gave a speech entitled "Citizen Participation in the Legal System," for which he was awarded First Place in the American Bar Association's nationwide Edward R. Finch Law Day speech contest. Judge Few is a Fellow in the Liberty Fellowship Class of 2008.

John's daughter Reed is a junior at Duke University, studying in Madrid in the fall of 2010. His daughter Anna is a senior, and President of her High School student body. His son is Cannon, a 7th grader. John is the son of J. Kendall Few of Greenville, and Belva Beasley Few of Greenwood. John and his children are members of First Presbyterian Church in Greenville.
