Judge Kellum W. Allen

Judge Kellum W. Allen was born in Columbia, South Carolina on April 13, 1951. His parents are H.S. Allen, Jr., formerly an Exxon service station owner, and Evelyn W. Allen, who worked as executive secretary to the Director of the S.C. Children's Bureau.

He attended public schools in Columbia and graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1969. Thereafter he received his BA degree in 1973 and his law degree in 1976, both from the University of South Carolina. Judge Allen served as an appointee to the US President's Commission on Children and Youth from 1970-1972. He worked as a tour leader in Western Europe in the summers of 1974 and 1975.

After graduation from Law School the first two years of his professional career were as a full time Assistant Public Defender for Greenville County from 1976 to 1978. In 1978 he went into the private practice of law in West Columbia, South Carolina, where he remained for 20 years with the firm of Kirkland, Wilson, Moore, Allen and Taylor. His practice emphasized civil and family law matters. In 1986 he served as President of the Lexington County Bar Association. While in private practice, Judge Allen served for 5 years as Associate Municipal Judge in West Columbia and was appointed by the Supreme Court for two years to the Commission on Lawyer Conduct. He was a member of the Lexington Medical Center Board of Trustees from 1981 to 1984 and chaired the Citizen's Bond Referendum Committee for Lexington School District Two in 1995.

On May 6, 1998, Judge Allen was elected to the Family Court Bench for the 11th Judicial Circuit. His term commenced on July 1, 1998. He has been appointed by the Supreme Court to the Commission on CLE and Specialization.

He is a member of Mount Hebron United Methodist Church where he has taught adult and youth Sunday School for years. He is married to the former Jane S. Inman of Rockingham, North Carolina and they have two children, Jennifer and David. Judge Allen enjoys sports (particularly the Gamecocks), traveling, and reading.
