Judge Landis was born and raised in Covington, Virginia, where he attended public schools. He graduated in 1977 from Erskine College where he majored in and received his BA in History. In 1980, he graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law and was admitted to the SC Bar.
Judge Landis has two children. Peter and Jane are both grown and out on their own.
Judge Landis is married to Marissa Jacobson and has two stepdaughters.
The Moncks Corner Town Council appointed Jack as Municipal Judge in 1987 and he served in that capacity for eleven years. He was elected to the Family Court Bench by the South Carolina General Assembly in May 1998.
Jack has previously served as President of the SC Conference of Family Court Judges, 2011-2012, as Secretary/Treasurer, 2009-2010, and Vice President, 2010-2011.
Judge Landis coached the Berkeley High School Mock Trial team for several years, helping them to win the State Championship in 1989, 1991, 1993, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2008. He has retired from coaching but now presides over competitions on the state and national level.
Jack has served the SC Bar Association on the Law Related Education Committee and both the Middle School and High School Mock Trial Sub-Committees. He was chairman of the LRE Committee for 2017-2019.
In 2003 he received the “Law Related Education Lawyer of the Year” award from the South Carolina Bar Association.
