Steven Coleman Kirven (“Steve”) was born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1950. He is the son of the late H. Grady Kirven and Nell Isbell Kirven. He is married to Sandra Thompson Kirven. They have one son, Coleman A. Kirven, a banker in Greenville, South Carolina, three grand-daughters, Porter, Camille and Cole, and a feisty Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Kate.

Judge Kirven grew up in Anderson where he attended the public schools, graduating with honors from T. L. Hanna High School in 1968. He then attended Presbyterian College, graduating magna cum laude with a B.S. in Business Administration in August, 1971. While in college he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. In December, 1973, he received his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Upon graduation from law school and completion of the bar exam in February, 1974, Judge Kirven became an Associate with his father’s firm in Anderson, Watkins, Vandiver, Kirven, Gable & Gray. He became a partner in that firm in October of 1977 and maintained a general practice there until August of 2002 when the Watkins Firm was merged into the McNair Law Firm, P.A. in which he became a Shareholder. In January of 2009, he opened his own law office in Anderson where he practiced as a sole practitioner until beginning his duties as Master-in-Equity for Anderson and Oconee Counties, Tenth Circuit, on July 1, 2016.

Judge Kirven has been active in the Anderson community through the years having served as a member of Anderson City Council for twenty-four years (July, 1978-June 1984, Seat 2; July, 1998-June, 2016, Seat 1). He has also served on numerous boards and committees including Innovate Anderson, Anderson Area Transportation Study Committee, Anderson YMCA, Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce and Anderson Rotary Club where he became a Paul Harris Fellow. He and his wife are members of First Presbyterian Church in Anderson.

Judge Kirven enjoys playing golf, reading, thinking, watching college football, going to the beach and attending the many events of his grand-daughters from school plays to Grand-Parents’ Day to soccer, basketball and lacrosse.
